No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
