Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
